Things to Do in Duluth in the Winter

  • Posted on

Minnesota is a state of 4 seasons, and in Duluth that's even more true. The wintertime is a wonderful time to visit Duluth. There are a lot of events, attractions, outdoor activities and indoor activities to enjoy during this season. Speaking of which, let's start with Bentleyville.

By now, most people have heard of Bentleyville in Duluth. If not, check out this article on the history of Bentleyville. It started as a light display created by Nathan Bentley in his Esko backyard and has evolved into one of the largest outdoor light displays in the upper midwest, with over 300,000 people attending each year in Duluth at Bayfront Park. It is free to attend, and our house, the Rose Garden Getaway, is just a 5-minute drive away. Bentleyville is a beautiful attraction enjoyed by all ages.

If you're a skiier, snowboarder, or just someone who loves the snow, go check out the slopes at Spirit Mountain. There is a terrain park, cross country ski trails, 22 downhill ski runs, and a snow tubing hill too. Once you've finished up outside, or just need a break to warm up, you can grab a bite to eat at either the Grand Ave Chalet or Skyline Chalet. You'll love the views of Duluth and the St. Louis River from the top of the mountain.

If you're looking for further cross country skiing trails, Duluth has TONS of them. The city parks like Chester, Lester, and Hartley all have groomed cross country ski trails available for use. At UMD, there are trails at Bagley Park too. Here's a helpful link to all the cross country ski trails in Duluth.

Need to get your shopping fix? Duluth has boutique shops in the Fitgers complex, Lincoln Park, and Canal Park offering hardy outdoor gear, antiques, and lots of other unique items. You can also go to the Miller Hill Mall where you'll find a variety of options from chain stores to locally owned shops.

Duluth is the hockey capital of Minnesota, in our opinion. If you're in town for a hockey tournament, you'll probably be at Amsoil Arena or the Duluth Heritage Center. But if you're looking for outdoor rinks to play some pickup games, here's a good article from the Duluth Mom blog directing you to all the hockey rinks. Or if you're more of a spectator and want to watch high-level, division 1 hockey, go check out a UMD hockey game at Amsoil Arena

Whatever you're into, Duluth has some cool options for you to enjoy while you stay. If you need a place to stay come stay with us at the Duluth Rose Garden Getaway. Book directly with us at manitouvacations.com!
